Abstract

As explained in the introduction to this volume and extensively discussed in many of its previous chapters, plurilingual pedagogy is an approach to teaching and learning that capitalizes on the learners’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds to support learning. As expressed by Piccardo et al. (2022), “a plurilingual approach encourages learners to look for the links between languages, and between language and culture, as well as increasing their awareness of how languages – including their mother tongue(s) – operate, so that they acquire a new feeling for the place and role of different registers and varieties” (p. 10). Given its fluid and flexible nature, this approach has potential in multilingual and multicultural contexts, presenting itself as a powerful pedagogy that empowers students and transforms the way they embrace learning and language learning in particular (see, e.g., the introduction to this volume, Coelho & Steinhagen.
