Abstract

This paper discusses some of the solutions to mitigate progressive collapse effects on framed structures. The framework of the solutions presented in this paper is the Alternate Path (AP) method described in many building codes and design standards. The notional removal of internal or external columns in the AP method and the ability of the system to bridge over the removed column is discussed. A challenge associated with the notional removal of corner columns in AP analyses is discussed and some of the solutions are presented. The importance of ductility in structural response after progressive collapse is initiated is highlighted. © Civil-Comp Press, 2009.
