dc.descriptionConstruction is one of the largest economic sectors in all the developed economies. For example in the UK, the industry had an output of some £58 billions in 1998, equivalent to roughly 10% of GDP, and employs around 1.4 million people.
dc.description.abstractThe recent Egan report on the UK construction industry has concluded that “integrated construction process” holds the key to further improvement in efficiency and productivity. In the last decade or so, considerable R&D efforts have been devoted to the integration issues in numerous research initiatives. A range of technologies of different levels of maturity have emerged from these studies, including data and process modelling, data management, data exchange using STEP standards, integrated project database, object oriented implementation, concurrent engineering systems, etc. The paper seeks to explore how these integration technologies can be used to support organisational changes necessary if the performance improvement is to be achieved.
