dc.descriptionDate palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a dioecious tree belonging to the Arecaceae (syn. Palmae) family [36]. Date palms can adapt to a variety of climate conditions, and are common trees in the Middle East and North Africa, where the warm and dry climate conditions suit cultivation of the trees. The global date fruit production reached approximately 9.75 million tonnes in 2022 [56]. Middle Eastern and North African countries cultivate nearly 85 million trees representing about ~ 70% of the world’s date palm trees [108], contributing significantly to the economy, food security, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability.
dc.description.abstractThis review highlights the potential of generating value-added products rich in phenolic compounds from date fruit (Phoenix dactylifera L.) and its processing by-products. The review presents the phenolic contents in date fruits and seeds and their potential applications as feedstocks in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. It discusses the extraction and characterization protocols for phenolic compounds and the research that is needed to fill the gaps in knowledge and standardization methods. The safety and suitability of date seeds as a functional food ingredient were discussed. The review aimed to serve as a guide towards innovative, scalable, and sustainable strategies for maximizing the environmental and economic benefits of date fruits.
