Impact of aspartame and sucralose consumption on blood glucose homeostasis and haemoglobin level in male albino rats

dc.description.abstractMethods: 54 male albino rats were divided into five groups, twelve rats in each group except control group 6 rats. Sweetal 2 and 4 g/kg and sugar match 0.8 and 1.6 g/kg were given orally every day for 12 weeks, artificial sweeteners were omitted for further 6 weeks. Rats were euthanized and FBG, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, HbAIC and CBC were measured. Results: HOMA-IR increased in rats supplemented by high doses of either sweetener, HbA1c significant increased with low and high doses of Sweetal 6.43 and 6.85 respectively. Haemoglobin level decreased with low dose aspartame by 1.0%. Terminating sweeteners intake resulted in a decline in blood glucose homeostasis and also affected haematocrit parameters. Conclusion: Sucralose and aspartame intake had a significant impact on blood glucose homeostasis and hemoglobin levels in male albino rats. Keywords Blood glucose, Aspartame, Sucralose, Impact
