dc.description.abstractNatural disasters are unpredictable and strike when they are least expected to. A disaster is defined as “an occurrence disrupting the normal conditions of existence and causing a level of suffering that exceeds the capacity of adjustment of the affected community”. This has placed significant emphasis on disaster management, with the intent of mitigating the loss of human lives and livelihoods. Several methods and technologies have been proposed to predict and manage disasters. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are steadily being incorporated into a variety of domains including disaster management. This research paper presents a comprehensive literature review on the applications of UAVs in the disaster recovery domain. By analyzing fire detection and extinguishing methods utilizing UAVs from 40 research papers, the main challenges and areas of open research are summarized.en_US
