Alternate models of professional practice in architecture have developed wherein architects have diversified to take on the role of a developer. The experience and feedback of these practitioners assumes great importance since available research on this topic is scarce. This study creates a database of practices wherein architects have been involved with development. It comprehensively reviews and integrates the experiences, challenges, and responses shared by them. Data was collected by reviewing literature published in news publications, blogs, and articles in trade journals and magazines that were indexed in databases such as Proquest and EBSCO. Information was extracted to fill out a matrix to discuss recurring and related themes. Findings show that a variety of roles exist in the area of design-development. Dissatisfaction with their existing situation, financial profit, need for autonomy, innovation, and advocacy were common motivational factors, while inability to take financial risks, time management, and acceptance by other professionals were mentioned as challenges. Research findings throw light on various aspects of the profession and will be useful to both practicing professionals as well as academics.
