Abstract

Extended end-plate moment connections are popular for constructing moment resisting frames subject to seismic forces. Fairly economic designs of rigid frames with extended end-plate moment connections in high seismicity regions were successful for buildings up to ten stories tall and much higher in regions with low seismicity. The design consideration and failure modes for extended end-plate moment connections under seismic forces are documented in AISC Design Guide 4, which is available in the U.S. customary system of units. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach to inventory and account for the critical failure modes in extended end-plate moment connections in S.I. system of units for ASTM standard W-shapes and consistent with current AISC specifications. The design approach discussed in this paper addresses three fully restrained connections that were already experimentally and numerically validated for seismic resistance. A case study is presented to demonstrate the process of designing the three types of seismic moment connections.
