Middle Eastern (ME) countries are home to expatriates (expats) from around the globe, and this makes them a surreal melting pot of diverse socio-economic and cultural segments. Their geographical location on the world map plays a strategically complimentary role, as Europe-Africa-Asia intersect here. Over the years, expats have become an integral part of the ‘whole’ populace in the region- blended and co-existent with the natives in harmony, respecting mutual cultures and traditions as well as contributing towards mutual economic goals. Given this background, expatriate management in the ME becomes unmistakably significant and deserves careful planning and attention on part of organisations and businesses- whether already established in the region or planning to venture therein. This chapter looks at some of these key considerations- how they facilitate expat management, what challenges they pose and how some of those may be tackled. Furthermore, it provides specific advice and recommendations- based on evidence and experience- to potential businesses, employers and expats aiming to achieve successful operations/ performance in the ME region.
