Abstract
An optimization scheme that minimizes power loss and side leakage in journal bearings applications in turbines and other machinery operating in laminar flow is developed. The power loss equation is derived and shown to give good results when simulating data from the literature. Two methods, namely, using weighting parameters/scaling factors and Pareto optimal fronts are compared. The latter method is recommended if the designer has no prior experience with selecting weighting parameters/scaling factors. A hybrid optimization technique that uses a genetic algorithm to converge to the global minimum and sequential quadratic programming for accurate location of the minimum point is used. The method gives consistently good predictions and has been verified by comparing predictions to available data in the literature.
