Drones, also known as UAVs, can be categorized based on their size, range, altitude, and type of rotors. Size categories include micro UAVs, mini UAVs, medium UAVs, and large UAVs. Range categories include the low-cost, close, short, and mid-range ranges. Altitude categories include Low Altitude Dive and Perform (LADP), Low Altitude Level and Elevate (LALE), and (Medium Altitude Level and Elevate (MALE). Finally, the authors categorized the UAVs into two types based on their rotors, namely single-rotor and multi-rotor [1] . UAVs are beneficial for several tasks, including search and rescue, tracking, surveillance, agricultural activities, military operations, payload delivery, and more. However, a single drone may encounter several difficulties while accomplishing many of the mentioned tasks in a large geographical area. Hence, it calls for organizing a swarm of UAVs from different angles to achieve the tasks that could not be furnished otherwise.
Therefore, this study aims to introduce a novel framework for leader and coordinator selection in a swarm of UAVs that may further reduce communication delay and increase the data transmission rate. The proposed reliable framework avoids single-point failure. We use an integrated greedy approach for leader selection using better channel gain, enhanced data transmission rate, and minimal round-trip delays as metrics. Furthermore, the UAV coordinator is selected based on the nearest distance. In addition, this study also proposes an efficient and iterative algorithm for the effective selection of UAV leaders and coordinators. The experimental results indicate that our proposed protocol minimizes delay by 20% and increases the data transmission rate by 102bps as compared with existing methods.
