This project presents the design and modeling of a smart street lighting system on a test bench by employing Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) and a Raspberry Pi 4 interfaced with a camera module. The camera module connected to the Raspberry Pi continuously monitors the road. The OpenCV-based algorithm, on detecting the approaching vehicle, calculates the speed of the car in real-time, based on which, it then estimates the number of lights to be switched on. The algorithm was tested in various scenarios with varying levels of light intensity and background. The system detected the vehicles with high accuracy and controlled lighting accordingly. © 2022 IEEE. keywords: Camera, Computer Vision, OpenCV, Python
