Challenges in improving genomic literacy, knowledge, and awareness

Abstract

Genomic literacy refers to an individual's ability to find, understand, and utilize genomic information and services to make informed health-related decisions. This chapter addresses the challenges that impede progress in genomic literacy, including ambiguous definitions, limited public awareness, and the complexity of the information. It also highlights how social and economic disparities affect access to education and contribute to unequal learning opportunities. Variability in defining and measuring genomic literacy, combined with widespread knowledge gaps and misconceptions, adds to these challenges. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological advancement in this field complicates understanding even further. To overcome these barriers, clear communication and specifically designed educational materials are vital. Incorporating genomics into high school curricula and employing interactive tools can significantly enhance comprehension. Furthermore, collaboration among diverse stakeholders is essential to developing ethical and social frameworks. By tackling these issues, we aim to close the knowledge gap and ensure that the advantages of genomic medicine are accessible to everyone.
