dc.descriptionConstruction is a collaborative activity involving a multi-disciplinary team including client, architect, engineer, consultant, contractor, etc. Each member of this team is responsible for certain aspects of the project. Different professions use their own unique processes to undertake their tasks, but often have to rely on information supplied by others. At present, the communication problem between the team members is often a cause for project delay and building defects. Improving the communication link has been identified as crucial to further efficiency gain in construction (Latham 1995)
dc.description.abstractWith the growing application of computers, the construction process is moving from a ‘paper based’ project execution to a future, fully computer based integrated environment that supports concurrent way of working. However, such a change will take a long time to complete. Atpresent, several different integration technologies co-exist at different research and development (R&D) stages. This paper identifies three types of project information integration approaches, document-based, schema-based and model-based. The characteristics of each type of system are reviewed and a comparative evaluation is presented.
